U.S. IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION

U.S. immigration and naturalization go hand-in-hand. Once you have immigrated to this country and lived here for a certain amount of time, you may be eligible to become a rightful U.S. citizen by way of naturalization. Naturalization can afford you the same benefits and privileges of any U.S.-born citizen, including the right to work, vote and run for office.

How U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Works

In order to be considered for citizenship through naturalization, you must be a permanent U.S. resident or green card-holder for at least 5 consecutive years. There cannot have been any leaves of absence for 6 months or longer during that time period.

Other requirements include:

• You must be at least 18 years old.
• You must have resided in your state for at least three months before filing the petition.
• You must continue to reside in the U.S. after filing your petition for naturalization.
• You must have shown good moral character (no criminal record) for five years.
• You must be able to pass a written and oral test called the English and Civics Exam, demonstrating a basic understanding of U.S. history, government and the English language.

If you meet all the requirements, you may file a form N-400, or Application for Naturalization. You may also be required to provide documentation and undergo a one-on-one interview with a representative from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services department. Once all paperwork is in order, the interview has been conducted and all exams have been passed, you will be permitted to take the Oath of Allegiance and become officially naturalized as a U.S. citizen.
