New Crash Test is Difficult for Modern Vehicles to Pass

In 2012, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced a new crash test called the Frontal Small Overlap. In an effort to improve safety in front impacts during car crashes. It has proven to be the most difficult crash test for modern vehicles to pass. The frontal small overlap works by crashing the front corner of a vehicle at 40 mph. A good test considering that 25% of frontal collisions deaths are due to small overlap crashes. This tests to see how a vehicle crumbles and absorbs an impact without causing serious injury to its passengers during a car accident. Due to safety regulations becoming stricter auto manufactures are scrambling to design safer vehicles and crash prevention technology.

The scale for IIHS crash test are as followed: Good, Acceptable, Marginal, with Poor being the lowest score rating. The video below shows an example of what a small overlap crash test looks like. Here is the 2017 BMW 3 series that IIHS rated as “Good” in this crash test.

2017 Cars and Trucks with Worst Crash Test & Satisfaction Scores

In a separate article we talked about vehicles that earned the for 2017. Now, we are going to talk about vehicles that scored low or marginal in crash tests. The vehicles on this list have been categorized by Consumer Reports.  In order to be on this list the vehicle had to have scored poorly in IIHS crash ratings. Note that road tests that study reliability, comfort, drive ability and overall satisfaction are taken into consideration.

  • Mitsubishi Mirage – Lowest rated subcompact car.

It scored an average in reliability, and a “poor” in crash tests.

  • Fiat 500L – Lowest rated compact car

Tested poor in small frontal overlap test. Earned worst reliability in 2016 for compact cars.

  • Chrysler 200 – Lowest rated midsize sedan

Earned a poor grade in crash tests and scored the lowest overall in reliability, and in road tests, for a midsize sedan.

  • Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 – Lowest rated entry level luxury sedan

Scored a “worse than average” in reliability and did not meet the safety ratings expected in a Mercedes-Benz.

  • Lincoln MKS – Lowest rated

Outdated technology was at fault for its below average reliability rating and poor crash test results.

  • Dodge Journey – Lowest rated midsize SUV

Earned worst fuel economy in its class. Scored a “poor” in crash tests and a below average in reliability.

  • Land Rover Discovery Sport – Lowest rated compact SUV

Landed a “much worse than average” rating in reliability and safety.

  • Cadillac Escalade – Lowest rated luxury SUV

Worst safety pick in its class. Consumer Reports said it, “floundered in our tests.”

  • Chrysler Town & Country Minivan – Lowest rated

Worst fuel economy in minivans and terribly poor scores in small frontal overlap tests.

  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV – Lowest rated  Electric/Hybrid compact

“Average” reliability but its small size means it tested poor in crash tests. Consumer Reports suggested choosing a different electric vehicle.
