There are a number of ways a foreign born individual can obtain citizenship in the United States. It can be done through familial relationships, military service, or through marriage and requires a process called “naturalization.” Want to learn how to obtain U.S. citizenship for yourself or a family member? Check out our guide below.
How to Obtain U.S. Citizenship: Who’s Eligible
There are two main groups of people who are eligible for U.S. citizenship: those who were born to one or more U.S. citizens, or those who currently hold a green card. Regardless of which group you fall into, you must meet a certain number of requirements before you can be granted U.S. citizenship. Some of these include living in the country for a minimum amount of years, being 18 years of age, and maintaining state residency for a certain period of time.
If you do not have U.S.-born parents, you also must prove your commitment to the U.S. through the naturalization process. During this process, you will need to demonstrate knowledge of the English language, U.S. civics and history, and you must pass a background check. If you’re approved, you will then need to take the oath of allegiance, declaring your support of the constitution, your service to the U.S., and your renouncement of your allegiances to any foreign countries.
