What is Cinco de Mayo Celebrating?
Cinco de Mayo is an unusual holiday because the United States celebrates it more than Mexico. In
addition, some Americans often confuse Cinco de Mayo as Mexico’s Independence Day, which is on the 16th of September. In fact, Cinco de Mayo is a remembrance of a victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This was during the Franco-Mexican War which lasted from 1861-1867. This battle is significant because the French army, at the time, was the greatest military force in the world. During the Battle of Puebla the French outnumbered the Mexican army 8,000 to 4,000. In addition to destroying the French army, they took away France’s 50 year undefeated record. That’s why the 5th of May is deemed a day of celebration. It serves as a moral victory and pride in overcoming the odds through unity.
San Antonio is No Stranger to Drunk Driving
Cinco de Mayo kicks off the weekend which means more people will be able to enjoy the festivities. That means an increase in possible drunk drivers. Last month San Antonio was enjoying the events of Fiesta. However, with an entire city celebrating this occasion its easy for people to go overboard. In mid-April, three SAPD officers were arrested for DWI within a time span of 12 hours. One officer was arrested for rear-ending a truck at an intersection. The second was arrested after an off-duty officer in a marked police car witnessed the driver running a red light. Details on the arrest of the third officer have not been released yet.
These are people who understand the consequences that come from drinking and driving. People that should know better, so what about the rest of us? According to CBS, Texas ranks 11th in the top 18 states with the highest rates for drunk driving. During the week of Fiesta, SAPD made 90 DWI arrests between April 20th and 23th. Last year, SAPD took 233 drivers off the road for drunk driving over the 10 day period during Fiesta.
