I’ve had this conversation many times in the past because of the type of work that I do. When I tell people that I always recommend legal representation to anyone injured in an accident, the reaction is usually, "Of course you would make that recommendation–you’re a lawyer."
I know it sounds very much like a self-serving posture but in all honesty, it’s not. Let me explain. Far too often those without representation can end up "trampled" by insurance company maneuvers. In my line of work I see it happen a lot! Insurance companies want to settle quickly and for as little as possible. It’s their job to project their interests. If you don’t go along with the quick settlement, they’ll stall to make you pay medical and other bills out of your own pocket, or they just make you wait and wait.
It’s important to understand that sometimes an injury from an accident may not manifest itself for many weeks after the event. If you settle prematurely you have no recourse later to claim those medical expenses. It’s unfortunate, but many people without skilled and experienced representation end up resolving their claims for much less than their full value.
If you’re injured in an accident, I strongly recommend that you retain a serious and skilled attorney in this area of law. You have Rights; protect them!
