Fiesta Safety 2020

The 2020 San Antonio Fiesta season is fast approaching and is due to provide 11 days of undiluted fun once again. Fiesta should mean fun, games, and a celebration of San Antonio’s unique culture. Sadly, Fiesta can mean heartbreak and injury all too often.

Started in 1891 as a parade to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto has become one of the nation’s highest earning events bringing in an average of $340 million for Alamo city.  Occuring in every part of the greater San Antonio area and over the course of a week and a half, San Antonio proves that nobody can beat our Fiesta!

According to MySA, with an estimated 3.5 million people, Fiesta has grown into a world famous party highlighting San Antonio’s diverse history and culture. Fiesta is fun but sadly some people insist on drinking too much and getting on the road.  Davis Law Firm cares about San Antonio and wish everyone a happy and accident free 2020 Fiesta!

Below we have some tips for getting the most out of Fiesta and making sure you make it home safely.

Over the Limit & Under Arrest

Drunk driving can be a problem at any large party or event, not just Fiesta. The fact that Fiesta is as popular as it is and lasts for as long as it does, drinking and driving can be a real problem. News4SA reported that in 2016 10 people were arrested for public intoxication, 4 people were arrested for disorderly conduct and there were 22 DWI arrests during Fiesta.

Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

If you’ve had a few drinks and are feeling buzzed but not drunk, it’s important to remmeber that buzzed driving is still drunk driving. Having just a couple of drinks can still have a real effect on your ability to drive. And no, having an energy drink at the end of the night does not help.

Plan for a Designated Driver

In this modern age, almost every knows how to hail an Uber or Lyft. If you plan on drinking, plan ahead to have a designated driver or a ride share take you home. Fiesta provides designated pick up and drop off zones so you will know exactly where to go.

You can also get pre-paid taxi cards in case you aren’t sure if you may drink or not. This way you don’t have to worry about being able to afford a sober ride home in case you spent more than you anticipated at Fiesta.

If you are going with a group of friends, plan ahead and pick a designated driver. That person will be responsible for making sure all their friends make it back home safely.

If you have a friend that you see is drinking too much and is going to drive home, take their keys away and either give them a ride home or get them an Uber. Doing this might not only save your friend’s life but also other innocent people they might hit.

Pay Attention and Be Safe

If you are the designated driver, first give yourself a well earned pat on the back. However, given that not everyone is as vigilant as you are, means you need to really pay extra attention to the road in order to be safe.

Driving defensively can not only save you, it can save your passengers as well. According to DMV.org you may be able to avoid an accident if you do the following:

Watch Out for Pedestrians

As if drivers that have had a few too many isn’t enough to worry about, you have to deal with tipsy pedestrians. Some of the pedestrians you see are experience Fiesta participants that are staying at one of the many amazing hotels we have in San Antonio. However, you will also be dealing with drunk tourists that are lost and not paying attention. They can make rash decisions about crossing the street when you don’t expect them to among many other things that you’d normally never see.

Watch Out For Drunk Drivers

It goes without saying, but if you see someone driving eratically that may be drunk, call the police. Again, you may be able to save multiple lives by getting the drunk off the road.

All of the Bexar county law enforcement agencies are dedicated to making Fiesta as fun and safe of a party as possible. Police are literally working overtime to ensure everyone’s safety whether they are a pedestrian or a driver during Fiesta San Antonio.
