Not All Traffic Accidents Are Caused by Motorists
This weekend is Fiesta, and San Antonio PD will be looking out to prevent people from driving drunk. Besides drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists who are intoxicated also pose a threat to themselves and motorists. Pedestrian accidents, and bicycle accidents, involving alcohol are not always caused by a drunk driver. Sometimes, intoxicated pedestrians and bicyclists can cause an accident with a motorists. In addition, this weekend will mean an increase in foot traffic in downtown San Antonio as people gather to partake in the festivities of Fiesta and the Battle of Flowers parade. As a result, this means an increase in the risk of alcohol related accidents.
Battle of the Flowers Parade 2017
Today is the day of The Battle of Flowers Parade, the oldest event and largest parade of Fiesta. In fact, this event is the only parade in the United States produced entirely by women, all of whom are volunteers. The celebrations will bring over 350,000 people to the downtown area. The origin of the Parade is to honor the heroes of the Alamo. Participants place a floral tribute on the lawn as they pass in front of the Alamo.
Pedestrian Accidents Caused by Alcohol
In 2013, 4,735 people were killed in pedestrian accidents in the United States. That same year, ER treated over 150,000 pedestrians for non-fatal crash-related injuries. This averages to one crash-related pedestrian death every 2 hours. In 2014, the total amount of people killed in alcohol related crashes 1/3 were pedestrians and 1/5 were bicyclists.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 49% of the car crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatality involve alcohol. Fatal crashes that involved a pedestrian killed who had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08, or greater, accounted for 34%. Of those accidents, 15% involved a driver with a BAC of greater than or equal to .08. We focus on alcohol related accidents involving DWI, but an intoxicated pedestrian can just as easily cause a car accident by walking into traffic.
