What is St. Patrick’s Day?
It is very easy to get caught up in the commercial aspect of a holiday without recognizing the origin of it. St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday that is celebrated worldwide, but what are we celebrating? According to our research, it’s not leprechauns and green beer. March 17th marks the anniversary death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Saint Patrick, born in Roman Britain, was kidnapped at the age of 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave. He managed to escape, but would later come back to Ireland. He is credited for bringing Christianity to the people of Ireland. Legend has it that Saint Patrick explained the Holy Trinity by using the leaves of a clover, the shamrock. St. Patrick’s Day is a celebratory tribute to a patron saint.
Drunk Drivers on St. Patrick’s Day
WalletHub estimates that 56.1% of Americans plan on celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year. That means law enforcement will be out running DUI checkpoints to keep drunk drivers off the road. According to NHTSA, 252 people have died in alcohol related car crashes on St. Patrick’s Day between 2011 and 2015. Nearly 1/3 of fatal car crashes that happen in the early hours of March 18th involve drunk drivers. The Alcohol Monitoring Systems, a company that supplies devices for monitoring alcohol levels, runs data every year on repeat drunk drivers. AMS expects a 17% jump on drinking violations by repeat DUI drivers on March 17th. That figure increases to 25% the following day, March 18th.
Anyone planning on celebrating tonight should be proactive about safety. Choosing to hire a taxi, or Uber is a common alternative to getting home at the end of the night. Don’t push your lucky by trying to drive home after several green colored drinks.
